Howard Lineberger, Geologist and Science teacher at Durham Academy will lead a group of Friends of Bolin Creek and interested walkers on a geologic tour of the Bolin Creek Valley. This valley contains an unusual geologic history. The Bolin Forest valley is located between Estes Drive and Homestead Drive.
Quoting from the Geology of the Durham-Chapel Hill Area of North Carolina. “Chapel Hill lies within the Piedmont region of North Carolina. The Piedmont belt is not confined only to NC, but extends southwestward to Alabama and northeastward to Maryland. The rock types that can be found in the Piedmont vary greatly, but can be described and explained within the context of Plate Tectonics. The bulk of the rocks are thought to have formed when Europe and Africa were moving toward the Americas during the time periods known as the late Precambrian Eon and the Paleozoic era (about 700 million years ago until about 245 million years ago). ”
