“At What Cost? A Community Information Session on the Hazards of Chapel Hill’s Coal Ash”
View the June 22nd Webinar

The Chapel Hill Town Council has decided to move ahead with a plan to put offices and housing on top of a coal ash landfill located underneath the police station on MLK Jr. Blvd. Instead of cleaning up the entire site, the Town elected to enter the North Carolina Brownfields program. The present concept plan includes not only offices, but apartments for low income residents and a large parking deck.

ACT Against Coal Ash, Chapel Hill Organization for Clean Energy (CHOCE), Friends of Bolin Creek, the Blue Ridge Environmental Defense League (BREDL) Climate Action NC, and concerned residents held this information session to ensure that residents are aware of coal ash in our community, the hazards associated with its presence, the Town’s current concept plan, and its implications for the health and safety of the community.

Informed residents, scientists, and legal experts describe the dangers coal ash poses and the ways in which the Town’s current plan insufficiently addresses the potentially dire consequences for residents.

Read more about why we believe the Town’s plan is a serious environmental justice issue and a threat to public health and safety.
