This American Mink (a semi-aquatic species of mustelid) is thriving on the rodents, fish, amphibians, and crustaceans that are abundant in Bolin Creek. The mink lives in the dense riparian zone that protects the creek from erosion, and filters the flood waters before they can reach the creek. In addition to being a capable swimmer, minks are also skilled tree climbers that benefit from a mixed habitat of stream and forest. As often as we think about our creek as a recreation destination, the mink reminds us that we are visiting a forest, filled with native wildlife residents. A glossy coat and predatory eye remind us that we are nature’s guests.
