What Happened
In October 2023, despite receiving over a hundred letters, the Carrboro council voted for the creekside alignment. After the vote, it was discovered that the town had commissioned a technical report that had not been provided to council members by town staff before the vote to move forward. The report describes many barriers to this alignment. See the following report: Sungate Technical Review of Carrboro Greenway Plan.
Here are 4 impediments to the plan along the creek:
- The Creekside alignment cannot comply with the Jordan Lake buffer rules;
- It crosses the Norfolk Southern RR several times, raising difficult right-of-way issues;
- Steep topography will make ADA compliance difficult;
- The Creekside alignment is in a Zone AE floodway, exposing the paved trail to damage by flooding and large maintenance costs. The required ‘No rise’ certification may not be achievable.
There is still an opportunity to make a difference! HOW YOU CAN HELP:
- Make Your Voice Heard. Encourage the Town of Carrboro to pursue funding the Seawell School Road sidepath to ensure safe access to connect neighborhoods to the school, connect northern neighborhoods to downtown Carrboro, and protect Bolin Creek. This route is less costly, half as long, and already on the MPO list for funding and will most importantly, less protect the health of Bolin Creek.
- Sign the petition to encourage the Town of Carrboro to pursue funding the Seawell School Road sidepath to ensure safe access to connect neighborhoods to the school, connect northern neighborhoods to downtown Carrboro, and protect Bolin Creek.
- Share the petition link with your family and friends, and on social media! Your voice must be heard on the matter of the Seawell School Road sidepath. This path is already on the MPO (Metropoliten Project Organization) list for funding. Let the members of the MPO and the Carrboro Town Council hear from you about the importance of using this path.
- Volunteer! We are currently looking for volunteers who can help us with events, social media, and public outreach. If you’re interested, please email info@bolincreek.org.
