Bolin Creek provides a home for an amazing diversity of creatures, including the rare four toed salamander, both in its waters and in the riparian buffer surrounding it. This stream also feeds into Jordan Lake, which is a water supply for over half a million people! Unfortunately, this wonderful stream is classified as impaired, meaning that it does not pass the standards set by our state for drinkable, fishable waters. Putting a two mile cement bikeway into the riparian buffer will be detrimental to habitat and water quality.
ALERT: The Carrboro Council voted October 17 in favor of a creekside alignment for a new bike path to run 2 miles in the riparian buffer of Bolin Creek. The Council made a choice based on public input from a town survey that failed to include the available choices. Most important, the Council voted before any facts were known about costs or environmental impacts among a number of choices. Friends of Bolin Creek has supported greenways but never in the riparian buffer of streams.

This map documents the many bike connections already available or planned in the upper Bolin Creek watershed. There is no evidence that a multi million dollar bikeway along the Creek in the riparian buffer would serve a connectivity need that cannot be met elsewhere.
