Let’s Bring Down More Chinese Privet Event

Friends of Bolin Creek is partnering with Rewild NC <\/strong>to selectively remove invasive species from Carolina North. Here’s a chance to get outside and help a local forest. The OWASA Corridor of Carolina North Forest runs parallel to Bolin Creek. And along much of that stretch, Chinese privet has grown for\u00a0decades\u00a0into 30-foot-tall behemoths. It has become a privet \u201cdesert\u201d because nothing grows under the thick privet canopy.<\/p>\n

With the blessing of the Carolina North Forest Manager and the leadership of Rewild NC, we support this effort to reduce this ecosystem threat. We will take down these privets, allowing native plants to flourish and halting the spread of privet berries. Stay tuned for information on plans to plant this area with native species.<\/p>\n

At this event, group leaders led by Steven Feurstein will use big saws to take down the trees. Volunteers will then disassemble the trees and create habitat piles where small mammals, reptiles, and birds can hide from predators.<\/p>\n

What we provide<\/strong><\/h4>\n

We provide all tools (saws, loppers, extractors, pruners, herbicide daubers) and PPE (gloves, protective eyewear) you will need for the event. You are, however, welcome to bring your own gear (tools, gloves, etc.).<\/p>\n

We will train you on the proper, safe use of these tools, but don’t hesitate to let us know if you’re\u00a0not <\/em>comfortable using any.<\/p>\n

What you bring<\/strong><\/h4>\n

Safety is our most important objective. Please wear long pants, long-sleeved shirts (it won’t\u00a0make you hotter), and closed-toed shoes. If you show up in sandals, you will be very limited in what you can do. If you show up in shorts, short sleeves, or tank top, you are likely to leave with lots of scratches and bites.<\/p>\n

Bring at least one bottle of water, two is even better. Do\u00a0not<\/em>\u00a0leave your water in the car.<\/p>\n

If you wear a belt, you will be able to carry your saw more easily and work more efficiently.<\/p>\n

Bug spray may be available, but you may want to bring your own to be sure.<\/p>\n

Rewild NC is a volunteer engagement network focused primarily on invasive plant removals, (which we like to call “tree rescues,” because that’s just about the most important thing we do) in North Carolina. We work with land conservancies, municipalities, and other organizations.<\/p>\n
