In its new 2025-26 budget proposal, the Town of Carrboro proposes to allocate $1.4 million in taxpayer funds for the design of a controversial greenway through Bolin Creek\u2019s fragile riparian area. The council is expected to approve the final budget on June 3rd.<\/p>\n

It\u2019s critical that residents attend and speak out at the next Carrboro Town Council budget discussions on June 3. Tell the Council: “Protect the creek”. Fund real needs. Thank you to all who sent an email to the Council expressing your concerns. You were heard. \u00a0If you have not yet sent a message to the Council, there is a last opportunity now before Tuesday, June 3 at 6 pm in Carrboro Town Hall, Room 110<\/strong>. Don’t hesitate to send another message if you feel inspired.<\/p>\n

✅ What\u2019s Wrong?<\/strong>
\n– The town\u2019s own engineering review reported serious problems with the route.
\n– The MPO (now Triangle West) normally pays for this type of project. They declined to fund Bolin Creek Phases III and IV this cycle. Reason: It is not a priority. Carrboro wants to pull from taxpayer dollars.
\n-We may never get full funding, which means that this 1.4 million is for nothing.
\n– The creek floods. A lot.
\n– The project violates Jordan Lake buffer rules.
\n– ADA-accessible bridges may not even be feasible, even though one of the promises is equity and accessibility.<\/p>\n

What Could $1.4 Million Do Instead?<\/strong><\/p>\n

– Invest in land and location options for affordable housing as residents are priced out by rising taxes and living costs
\n– Fund Seawell School Road side path, which connects three schools and serves far more daily users
\n– Support safe bike and pedestrian infrastructure in high traffic and poor access areas.<\/p>\n
